Cohabitation

cohabitation

Did you know that Michigan has not recognized common law marriage since 1957?

Common Law Marriage was abolished n Michigan in 1957. That means if you live with a partner and then break up, you do not have the same rights to money and property you would if you had been married, even if you have kids together! If you are cohabiting, it is important to name each other on your life insurance policies and retirement benefits. It is also important to have your house properly titled in both of your names.

Michigan courts may enforce a written agreement between cohabiting non married people. If you are a non-married, cohabiting couple and you would like to have a cohabitation agreement drafted, call me!
